Eelco Dolstra, the creator of the Nix package manager, announced his decision to resign as the head of the management board of the NixOS Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the infrastructure, manages financial flows, and addresses legal issues for the NixOS project. This decision came after a collective open letter criticizing Eelco's actions and raising concerns for the future of Nix and NixOS was published. The letter was initially published by anonymous authors, but after its release, it was signed by 160 people.

The open letter mentions a leadership crisis in the project and the current management's inability to address community issues properly, leading to these issues remaining unresolved for many years. In particular, it highlights the management's failure to establish and advocate for the values the community should uphold, as well as to hold members accountable for inappropriate behavior. According to the letter's authors, a toxic culture has developed within the community, and the NixOS Foundation's leadership is inactive in eradicating it.

It is claimed that the emergence of such a toxic culture, which threatens the project's viability, stems from Eelco Dolstra's behavior as a leader, undermining the authority of other members, refusing to delegate powers to others, ignoring community issues, and supporting conflicts of interest. The letter notes that the project has reached a turning point, after which continued inaction may lead to a loss of trust, cessation of corporate support, the resignation of some of the most active participants, as well as the disbandment of the core community and the collapse of the moderation team. The signatories expressed their willingness to support a fork of the project if Eelco Dolstra does not resign.
