A DNS root server (c.root-servers.net) is one of 13 servers that ensure the operation of the DNS root zone (the initial link in the domain name resolution chain, providing information about DNS servers serving top-level domains and keys for their verification using DNSSEC). For four days, it was out of sync with other root DNS servers. The operations of root DNS server 'C' (192.33.4.12) are supported by 12 servers located in different countries. During this period, there were no changes made to the root zone, but work was scheduled to update the DNSEC digital signature for the top-level domain '.gov', as part of the transition to cryptographic keys based on the ECDSA algorithm. Algorithms 8 (RSA\/SHA-256) and 13 (ECDSA P-256\/SHA-256) have been used recently to sign the '.gov' zone in DNSSEC, but algorithm 8 remains active. Over the weekend, it was planned to add a DS record for algorithm 13 to the root zone, after which the process of removing the DS record for algorithm 8 would begin.
