Andreas Kling, a creator of the SerenityOS operating system, announced his resignation as the 'benevolent dictator for life' (BDFL) of the project and his switch to developing a fork of the Ladybird web browser, which was previously developed as part of SerenityOS. According to Andreas, for the past two years he has distanced himself from the development of the operating system and focused solely on the development of his own browser engine and the application Ladybird based on it, implementing the web browser. As a strong community of over a thousand participants has formed around SerenityOS, capable of functioning without him, Andreas decided to fully switch to the development of the Ladybird browser and promote it as a self-sufficient project independent from SerenityOS.

The Ladybird browser has evolved from a simple HTML viewer specific to SerenityOS to a cross-platform product utilizing its own browser engine. In fact, the browser has outgrown SerenityOS, splitting the community into two groups — OS developers and cross-platform browser developers. As the developers working on the browser and the operating system gradually distanced themselves and lost common interests, it was ultimately decided to fully separate these projects. After the split, Andreas will lead the development of the browser, while the core maintainer group will take over the management of SerenityOS.
