A Canonical Kernel Team announcement indicated a change in the process for selecting the Linux kernel version for upcoming Ubuntu releases. It has been decided to supply the latest kernel available at the time of release. Accordingly, the stabilization and preparation of kernel packages for new versions of Ubuntu can now be based not only on existing kernel release builds but also on published release candidates. <\/p>\n

Previously, the kernel version for the next Ubuntu release was chosen based on the stable kernel release that existed at the time of the future release's feature freeze. Given that new kernel branches are formed every 2-3 months, it often happened that a previous kernel branch was included in the Ubuntu release, despite a new stable branch being published shortly before the Ubuntu release. This caused dissatisfaction among users who wanted to have the latest kernel with up-to-date features and hardware support. <\/p>\n

The new version selection process allows for the selection of a kernel that is still in the change acceptance phase or early release candidates when the Ubuntu feature freeze occurs. To approve the kernel version by the time the beta version is formed (about a month before the Ubuntu release), the kernel must be at the release or late release candidate stage (rc4 and newer). In this case, the kernel release will be issued shortly before the Ubuntu release, and the kernel package for Ubuntu will be tested based on preliminary versions, which after 4 release candidates are generally already quite stable and include only bug fixes. For example, in the October release of Ubuntu 24.10, they plan to supply the upcoming kernel 6.11 instead of the already available kernel 6.10, which is expected to be released at the end of September.
