A Fedora Workstation 42 release, scheduled for spring next year, is proposed to switch by default to the Anaconda installer variant, which utilizes a web interface instead of a GTK-based interface. The issue of employing a fundamentally different interface for disk partitioning in the new installer is being discussed separately. The proposals have not yet been approved by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspect of the Fedora distribution's development (initially, the transition to the new installer was proposed for Fedora 39, but since then the migration has been postponed several times). <\/p>\n

The new web interface is built using the React JavaScript framework, PatternFly design elements, and components from the Cockpit project, which is already used in Red Hat products for configuration and kezel\u00e9s\u00e9hez.<\/a>. Cockpit was chosen as a well-established solution, for which there is a backend for interacting with the installer (Anaconda DBus). The use of Cockpit also helped to achieve consistency and unify various system management components. Since earlier, most of Anaconda was divided into modules interacting through the DBus API, the new interface uses the existing prepared API for accessing the functions of the installer. <\/p>\n

Among the advantages of the new installer, simplification of the installation process, elimination of complications, a more user-friendly organization of the installation for beginners, an easy reinstallation process, and simplification of maintenance and development of add-ons are noted. The web interface also allows interaction through a web browser, significantly enhancing the convenience of remote management of the installation compared to using the VNC protocol. Instead of the main screen with a list of actions, the new interface is organized in the form of a wizard, implying a sequential execution of specific steps without returning to the main screen. <\/p>\n
