A Xubuntu distribution's official website has been compromised by unknown attackers, who changed the links on the distribution's download page to point to the file Xubuntu-Safe-Download.zip<\/a>. As a result, the download page now only contains links to a malicious archive and available mirrors. The Xubuntu developers have not yet commented on the situation, but several hours ago, they removed the malicious archive and blocked access to the xubuntu.org\/download\/<\/a> section, redirecting users to the main page of the site. <\/p>\n

Copies of xubuntu.org were made by archive.org on October 11 and 18 \u2014 on October 11, the page had not yet been altered, while on October 18, the page already showed the malicious modification. The project's mirrors, through which the ISO images are distributed, seem to have remained unaffected according to preliminary checksum analysis, corresponding to the reference cdimage.ubuntu.com. Signs of compromise have only been noted on the xubuntu.org website, which uses a WordPress tartalomkezel\u0151 rendszert<\/a>. It is presumed that the hack was carried out through an outdated plugin for WorkPress that contains a vulnerability. <\/p>\n

The archive distributed by the attackers, Xubuntu-Safe-Download.zip<\/a>, contains an executable file for the Windows platform, presented as the Xubuntu installer. A check of the specified file on VirusTotal shows the presence of malware. <\/p>\n

When the executable file is launched, it displays a fake interface, including fields to select the version of the distribution for download and the type of package, as well as a button labeled Generate Download Link<\/a>. When the button is pressed, a file named elzvcf.exe<\/a> is saved to the AppData Roaming<\/code> directory, and its execution is configured in the Windows registry upon system startup. Preliminary information indicates that the malware analyzes data in the clipboard and replaces addresses for Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Tron, Ripple, and Cardano wallets with those of the attackers.

Interestingly, on September 10, one user complained about a blog post on the xubuntu.org website advertising a casino, but this blog post was promptly removed, and the incident did not develop further (presumably, it was thought that the advertisement had been placed by malware on the user's side).
