A QEMU emul\u00e1tork\u00e9nt lehet\u0151v\u00e9 teszi, hogy egy, az egyik hardverplatformra k\u00e9sz\u00fclt programot egy teljesen elt\u00e9r\u0151 architekt\u00far\u00e1val rendelkez\u0151 rendszeren futtassunk, p\u00e9ld\u00e1ul ARM alkalmaz\u00e1st ind\u00edthatunk x86-os kompatibilis PC-n. Virtu\u00e1lis \u00fczemm\u00f3dban a QEMU-ben az elk\u00fcl\u00f6n\u00edtett k\u00f6rnyezetben v\u00e9gzett k\u00f3d v\u00e9grehajt\u00e1s\u00e1nak teljes\u00edtm\u00e9nye k\u00f6zel \u00e1ll a hardver rendszer\u00e9hez, mivel az utas\u00edt\u00e1sok k\u00f6zvetlen v\u00e9grehajt\u00e1s\u00e1ra k\u00e9pes a CPU-n, \u00e9s ig\u00e9nybe veszi a Xen hipervizort vagy a KVM modult a Linuxban, illetve az NVMM modult a NetBSD-ben.    <\/p>\n<p>A projektet eredetileg Fabrice Bellard hozta l\u00e9tre azzal a c\u00e9llal, hogy lehet\u0151v\u00e9 tegye az x86-ra k\u00e9sz\u00fclt Linux v\u00e9grehajthat\u00f3 f\u00e1jlok futtat\u00e1s\u00e1t m\u00e1s architekt\u00far\u00e1kon. A fejleszt\u00e9s sor\u00e1n a teljes emul\u00e1ci\u00f3t 14 hardverarchitekt\u00fara sz\u00e1m\u00e1ra hozz\u00e1adt\u00e1k, a t\u00f6bb mint 400 emul\u00e1lt hardvereszk\u00f6zt is figyelembe v\u00e9ve.
