A forking moment, created to address branding and marketing issues, saw not only the staff at Collabora but also all developers of LibreOffice Online from the community switch to a new repository. After the fork's creation, for two years no one wanted to continue supporting the old LibreOffice Online repository, which is why it was frozen. The community formed around Collabora Online operates in the style of Fedora and openSUSE, with open and transparent processes, and contributions from external participants are valued. <\/p>\n

Michael sees the resumption of development of the old LibreOffice Online codebase as a senseless step, since the main development has long been taking place in the Collabora Online repository and it is unlikely that existing participants will switch to the LibreOffice Online repository. Recreating the LibreOffice Online repository as a fork of the current Collabora Online repository, rebranding all of Collabora's work, is perceived as vandalism towards the project, which could lead to serious negative consequences for both LibreOffice and Collabora. Michael suggests maintaining the established status quo from five years ago, where credit is reasonably distributed between the two projects. <\/p>\n

The code specific to Collabora Online consists of 95% contributions to the development from Collabora and its partners. In 2025, employees of Collabora contributed 45% of all changes to LibreOffice. During the preparation of the LibreOffice 26.2 release, support for Markdown format, most changes in Writer, Chart, and Impress, as well as half of the changes in the user interface and Calc, were prepared by Collabora, with the organization The Document Foundation this year not even mentioning Collabora in the announcement of LibreOffice 26.2, unlike previous press releases.
