Andreas Tille, a project leader for Debian, published a monthly report explaining that he chose not to participate in the leadership elections for the third time to encourage other participants to nominate themselves. As a result, there is only one candidate for the leadership this year — Sruthi Chandran, a participant from India. Voting began yesterday and will last until April 17, but the outcome seems predetermined as it is unlikely that the majority of participants will vote 'against all'.

In the second part of the report, Andreas Tille shared his opinion on the implementation of laws requiring age verification APIs for operating systems, passed in some U.S. states and Brazil. It is noted that the applicability of these laws to a non-profit project developed by volunteers and distributed for free remains unclear — the implementation of measures for compliance with these laws is still under discussion by developers and legal evaluation by the SPI (Software in the Public Interest) organization.

The addition of an API for applications to request user age information is also being discussed by developers of the Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, and NixOS distributions. Specific decisions have not yet been made, but the possibility of implementing the necessary API is being considered. In systemd, a change has already been made to add a birthDate field in userdb with the user's date of birth, and in the homectl utility, an option '--birth-date' for setting age has been introduced. The added field may be used in the developing portal for distributions, xdg-desktop-portal, and the AccountsService to provide applications with information about the user's age category through the D-Bus interface 'org.freedesktop.AgeVerification1' or 'org.freedesktop.ParentalControls'.
