A Sega MegaDrive port is analogous for executing the Linux kernel on a Motorola 68000 CPU, which lacks a hardware memory management unit (MMU). The default kernel 7.2.0-rc1 was built in the microcontroller mode 'NOMMU', allowing for a flat memory model with a linear address space. Initially, developments to operate without an MMU were made in a fork of the uClinux kernel, but were later incorporated into the main kernel as the 'NOMMU' option. The issue of insufficient RAM was addressed differently, utilizing the execute-in-place (XIP) mechanism, which allows the kernel code to be executed directly from ROM without copying it to RAM. <\/p>\n

The RAM on the device is mirrored at address 0x000000, while the ROM (cartridge) is at address 0x80000. Consequently, the components of the Linux kernel were divided into two separate memory areas: the .rodata and .text sections, containing constants and code, were located on the cartridge, whereas the .data and .bss sections, containing mutable data, were in RAM. Since the CPU 68000 looks for the interrupt vector table at address 0x0 and the kernel is actually located on the cartridge, which is mirrored at address 0x80000, an additional hack was implemented to copy the interrupt vectors into RAM. <\/p>\n

To build the user space components, the Buildroot toolkit was used with patches from the LinuxMD project. To save memory, the command shell '\/bin\/busybox sh' was called directly during initialization, the malloc function in the uClibc library was replaced with a simpler version, malloc-simple, which does not retain additional metadata, and instead of a full-fledged bootloader like U-Boot, a direct jump to the kernel was performed using the command 'jmp $80000'.
