A Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT CSAIL) Artificial Intelligence Laboratory engineer designed a \"smart surface\" called RFocus, which \"can work as a mirror or a lens\" to focus radio signals on the desired devices.<\/p>\n

Currently, there is a specific problem with providing a stable wireless connection for miniature devices, where there is virtually no space to accommodate antennas. This can be corrected by the \"smart surface\" RFocus, an experimental version of which increases the average signal power by almost 10 times while doubling the channel's bandwidth.  <\/p>\n

Instead of several monolithic antennas, RFocus developers used over 3000 miniature antennas, complemented by the appropriate software, which achieved such a significant increase in signal power. In other words, RFocus functions as a beam direction controller placed in front of the end client devices. The project authors believe that such a panel will be relatively inexpensive to produce, as each miniature antenna costs only a few cents. It is noted that the RFocus prototype consumes less power compared to conventional systems. The reduction in power consumption was achieved by eliminating signal amplifiers from the system.<\/p>\n

The project authors believe that their system, released in the form of \"thin wallpapers,\" can find wide application, including in the field of the Internet of Things (IoT) and fifth-generation (5G) communication networks, providing signal amplification transmitted to end-user devices. Before that, they need to refine the final product design, making the system as efficient and appealing as possible to potential buyers.<\/p>\n
