A projekt eredetileg a BeOS oper\u00e1ci\u00f3s rendszer bez\u00e1r\u00e1s\u00e1ra adott v\u00e1laszk\u00e9nt j\u00f6tt l\u00e9tre, \u00e9s OpenBeOS n\u00e9ven fejl\u0151d\u00f6tt, de 2004-ben \u00e1tnevezt\u00e9k a BeOS v\u00e9djegyhaszn\u00e1lat\u00e1val kapcsolatos k\u00f6vetel\u00e9sek miatt. Az \u00faj kiad\u00e1s m\u0171k\u00f6d\u00e9s\u00e9nek \u00e9rt\u00e9kel\u00e9s\u00e9re <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.haiku-os.org\/get-haiku\">elk\u00e9sz\u00edtett<\/a><\/noindex> t\u00f6bb Live ISO k\u00e9pf\u00e1jlt (x86, x86-64) k\u00e9sz\u00edtettek. Az Haiku oper\u00e1ci\u00f3s rendszer egyes forr\u00e1sk\u00f3djai szabad licenc alatt \u00e9rhet\u0151k el <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.opensource.org\/licenses\/mit-license.php\">MIT<\/a><\/noindex>, kiv\u00e9ve n\u00e9h\u00e1ny k\u00f6nyvt\u00e1rat, m\u00e9dia-k\u00f3dert \u00e9s a m\u00e1s projektekb\u0151l \u00e1tvett \u00f6sszetev\u0151ket.<\/p>\n<p>Az Haiku oper\u00e1ci\u00f3s rendszer a szem\u00e9lyi sz\u00e1m\u00edt\u00f3g\u00e9pek sz\u00e1m\u00e1ra k\u00e9sz\u00fclt, saj\u00e1t mag\u00e1ra \u00e9p\u00fcl\u0151 magot haszn\u00e1l, amely modul\u00e1ris architekt\u00far\u00e1ra \u00e9p\u00fcl, optimaliz\u00e1lva a felhaszn\u00e1l\u00f3i interakci\u00f3kra val\u00f3 gyors reag\u00e1l\u00e1st \u00e9s a p\u00e1rhuzamos alkalmaz\u00e1sok hat\u00e9kony v\u00e9grehajt\u00e1s\u00e1t. A fejleszt\u0151k sz\u00e1m\u00e1ra objektum-orient\u00e1lt API \u00e1ll rendelkez\u00e9sre. A rendszer k\u00f6zvetlen\u00fcl a BeOS 5 technol\u00f3gi\u00e1ira \u00e9p\u00fcl, \u00e9s c\u00e9lja a BeOS alkalmaz\u00e1sainak bin\u00e1ris kompatibilit\u00e1sa. A k\u00f6nyvt\u00e1rszerkezet megszervez\u00e9s\u00e9hez &#171;B+ fa&#187; f\u00e1kat haszn\u00e1lnak.
