Konstantin Komarov, a founder and leader of Paragon Software, k\u00f6zz\u00e9tett<\/a><\/noindex> a Linux kernel mailing list patch csomagot<\/a><\/noindex> with a complete implementation of the file system NTFS<\/a><\/noindex>, supporting read-write mode. The code is open under the GPL license.<\/p>\n

The implementation supports all features of the current version of NTFS 3.1, including extended file attributes, data compression mode, efficient handling of file gaps, and the ability to replay changes from the journal to restore integrity after failures. The proposed driver currently uses its own trimmed-down implementation of the NTFS journal, but plans to add support for full journaling on top of the universal block device JBD<\/a><\/noindex> (Journaling block device), on which journaling in ext3, ext4, and OCFS2 is based.<\/p>\n

The driver is based on the codebase of an existing commercial product<\/a><\/noindex> from Paragon Software and is well tested. The patches are formatted according to the coding preparation requirements for Linux and do not contain bindings to additional APIs, allowing the new driver to be included in the main kernel. After the patches are included in the main Linux kernel, Paragon Software intends to provide maintenance, bug fixes, and functionality expansion.<\/p>\n

However, inclusion in the kernel may take time due to the need for review of the proposed code by external developers. Comments on the publication also mention probl\u00e9ma<\/a><\/noindex> issues with building and noncompliance with<\/a><\/noindex> a number of requirements<\/a><\/noindex> for patch formatting. For example, it is suggested to break the submitted patch into parts, as 27 thousand lines in one patch is too much and creates difficulties in reviewing and checking. The MAINTAINERS file recommends explicitly defining the policy for further code maintenance and indicating the Git branch to which corrections should be sent. There is also a need to agree on adding a new NTFS implementation in light of the existing fs\/ntfs driver, which operates in read-only mode.<\/p>\n

Previously, to gain full access to NTFS partitions from Linux, one had to use the NTFS-3g FUSE driver, which operates in user space and does not provide the desired performance.
