BusyBox 1.37-ի մինիմալիստական համակարգային գործիքների փաթեթի թողարկումը

Almost two years of development have resulted in the release of BusyBox 1.37, featuring a set of standard UNIX utilities packaged as a single executable file optimized for minimal resource consumption, with the total size under 1 MB. The first release of the new 1.37 branch is labeled unstable, with full stabilization expected in version 1.37.1, anticipated in a few months. The project's code is distributed under the GPLv2 license.

The modular nature of BusyBox allows for the creation of a unified executable file containing an arbitrary set of implemented utilities (each utility is available as a symbolic link to this file). The size, composition, and functionality of the utility collection can be adjusted based on the needs and capabilities of the embedded platform for which the build is being prepared. The package is self-sufficient; with a static build using uclibc, only a few device files need to be created in the /dev directory, and configuration files need to be prepared to create a working system above the Linux kernel. Compared to the previous release 1.36, the memory consumption of the typical BusyBox 1.37 build has increased by 1535 bytes (from 1022792 to 1024327 bytes).

BusyBox is a key tool in combating GPL violations in firmware. Organizations such as the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) and Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) have repeatedly successfully influenced companies that do not provide access to the source code of GPL programs, both through lawsuits and via out-of-court agreements on behalf of BusyBox developers. Meanwhile, the author of BusyBox strongly opposes such protection, believing it harms his business.

Notable changes in BusyBox 1.37 include:

  • The implementation of the getfattr utility has been added to display extended file attributes.
  • In udhcpd, optional BOOTP protocol support has been implemented.
  • The hwclock utility now includes the ability to display and set RTC (Real-Time Clock) parameters. For example, use 'hwclock —param-get bsm' to read, and 'hwclock -p bsm=1' to change.
  • Support for configuring CAN devices using the netlink interface ('ip link set type can') has been added to the 'ip link' command.
  • The find utility now includes the option '-ok command' to execute a command after prompting the user for confirmation.
  • A new batch of fixes for the ash and hush shells aimed at improving compatibility with other shells has been included. Support for auto-completion of function names and aliases using the Tab key has been added. The hush shell now includes a built-in implementation of the 'false' command.
  • In awk, the flag '-E' has been implemented to read the script text from a file.
  • In the od utility, the option '-B' (synonymous with '-t o2') for outputting as octal 2-byte values has been implemented.
