In OpenSUSE Tumbleweed (currently as an option), support for the systemd-boot bootloader is introduced as an alternative to GNU GRUB. According to the developers' official version, switching to Systemd-Boot will allow for improved boot speed and enhanced security of the boot process. The developers also expect that transitioning to systemd-boot will simplify and increase the efficiency of working with full disk encryption, as well as facilitate the management of snapshots in the Btrfs file system.
It should be noted that systemd-boot does not support Master Boot Record. If in the future systemd-boot remains the only boot option, running OpenSUSE on older PCs without a UEFI emulator, like Clover, will be impossible.
