Sam Hartman, leader of the Debian project, while trying to understand the disagreements between the maintainers of the elogind packages (an interface for running GNOME 3 without systemd) and libsystemd, caused by a conflict between these packages and the recent refusal of the team responsible for preparing releases to include elogind in the testing branch, suggested the possibility of supporting multiple initialization systems in the distribution.
If project participants vote in favor of diversifying initialization systems, all maintainers will be involved in collaborative efforts to address this task, or special responsible developers will be appointed to work on this issue, and the maintainers will no longer be able to ignore the alternative initialization system, remain silent, or prolong the process.
