In Fedora Linux 43 on x86 architecture systems, only the use of GPT (GUID Partition Table) will be retained for all Fedora installations using UEFI. This change has not yet been reviewed by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspects of Fedora distribution development. If the proposal is approved, support for installing Fedora in UEFI mode on disks with MBR (Master Boot Record) partition tables will be discontinued on x86 systems, while remaining available on ARM and RISC-V systems.
The reason for discontinuing MBR support is attributed to the low reliability of booting in such configurations, inconsistencies in MBR support across firmware, and inadequate testing in Fedora (the GRUB2 documentation prescribes using GPT for UEFI). It is anticipated that by leaving only GPT support in the Anaconda installer for x86 systems, emergency shutdowns during the boot stage caused by efibootmgr failures can be eliminated. The discontinuation of MBR support will also reduce the burden on support staff, simplify maintenance, and testing.
