The test release of the Xfce 4.20 Pre2 desktop environment has been published, aiming to provide a classic desktop environment that requires minimal system resources. The release is expected on December 29, if a decision is made to publish another test release, Xfce 4.20 Pre3, or on December 15, if developers consider the codebase stable enough.
The Xfce 4.20 branch is notable for adding experimental support for working with the Wayland protocol. A new library, libxfce4windowing, is employed to abstract the operation over Wayland and X11, offering a graphics system-independent layer where window management components (screens, root windows, virtual desktops, etc.) are implemented. Instead of libmutter, the wlroots library, developed by the Sway project, is used in the Wayland-based session.
