Alyssa Rosenzweig di Collabora, che sviluppa il driver Panfrost per le GPU Mali, ha annunciato la preparazione per Mesa di una prima implementazione del driver OpenGL asahi con supporto per il processore grafico presente nei chip Apple M1. Il driver utilizza l'interfaccia Gallium e supporta gran parte delle funzionalit\u00e0 di OpenGL 2.1 e OpenGL ES 2.0. La funzionalit\u00e0 implementata \u00e8 attualmente insufficiente per avviare la maggior parte dei giochi, ma il driver \u00e8 gi\u00e0 in grado di avviare le applicazioni glxgears e glmark2, e supera con successo circa il 75% dei test del drawElements Quality Program, utilizzati dal consorzio Khronos per la certificazione della compatibilit\u00e0 con OpenGL ES 2.0. <\/p>\n

Il codice del prototipo proposto \u00e8 gi\u00e0 stato accettato nel codice sorgente principale di Mesa. Il nuovo driver \u00e8 basato sul driver di riferimento Gallium noop con il trasferimento di parte del codice dal driver Panfrost, sviluppato per le GPU ARM Mali. In futuro, oltre al driver OpenGL per Mesa, \u00e8 previsto un modulo per il sottosistema DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) del kernel Linux e un driver Mesa con implementazione dell'API grafica Vulkan. <\/p>\n

Ricordiamo che il chip Apple M1 non \u00e8 standard, \u00e8 realizzato su misura e presenta caratteristiche architettoniche uniche. Ad esempio, l'Apple M1 utilizza una GPU progettata internamente da Apple.
