Moksha \u00e8 in sviluppo come fork della base di codice Enlightenment 17 (E17), creata per continuare lo sviluppo di Enlightenment come desktop leggero, a seguito di dissensi sulla politica di sviluppo del progetto, dell'espansione dell'ambiente Enlightenment 19 (E19) e del deterioramento della stabilit\u00e0 della base di codice.
