Till Kamppeter, leader del progetto OpenPrinting, ha annunciato che, a causa della mancanza di interesse da parte di Apple nel mantenere il sistema di stampa CUPS, il fork di CUPS fondato l'anno scorso pu\u00f2 essere considerato come il progetto principale per la trasmissione delle patch e l'inclusione nelle distribuzioni. Nello sviluppo del fork partecipa Michael R Sweet, l'autore originale di CUPS, che ha lasciato Apple un anno e mezzo fa. <\/p>\n

Dall'inizio del 2020, non \u00e8 stata apportata alcuna modifica al repository CUPS supportato da Apple, e il progetto si trova in profonda stagnazione. Considerando l'importanza di CUPS per l'ecosistema Linux, il team di OpenPrinting ha deciso di prendersi la responsabilit\u00e0 del codice CUPS e ha fondato un fork lo scorso autunno. Tra le modifiche gi\u00e0 apportate si segnala l'integrazione delle patch accumulate nel pacchetto per Ubuntu, oltre all'aggiunta di funzionalit\u00e0 necessarie per distribuire lo stack di stampa basato su CUPS, cups-filters, Ghostscript e Poppler in un pacchetto autonomo in formato Snap (Ubuntu prevede di passare a questo snap invece dei pacchetti normali). Un altro fronte di lavoro \u00e8 la correzione di bug che sono stati segnalati negli ultimi 15 mesi nel repository di Apple. <\/p>\n

In futuro, con il rilascio di CUPS 3.0, \u00e8 stata presa la decisione di interrompere il supporto per il formato di descrizione delle stampanti PPD e di passare a un'architettura modulare del sistema di stampa, completamente priva di PPD e basata sull'utilizzo del framework PAPPL per lo sviluppo di applicazioni per la stampa (CUPS Printer Applications) basate sul protocollo IPP Everywhere.

Ricordiamo che l'organizzazione OpenPrinting \u00e8 stata fondata nel 2006 a seguito della fusione del progetto Linuxprinting.org e del gruppo di lavoro OpenPrinting della Free Software Group, che si occupava dello sviluppo dell'architettura del sistema di stampa per Linux (Michael Sweet, autore di CUPS, era uno dei leader di questo gruppo). Un anno dopo il progetto \u00e8 passato sotto l'ala della Linux Foundation. Nel 2012 il progetto OpenPrinting, d'accordo con la Apple, ha preso in carico la manutenzione del pacchetto cups-filters con i componenti necessari per il funzionamento di CUPS in sistemi diversi da macOS, poich\u00e9 a partire dal rilascio di CUPS 1.6, Apple ha interrotto il supporto per alcuni filtri di stampa e backend utilizzati in Linux, che non sono di interesse per macOS, e ha anche dichiarato obsoleti i driver nel formato PPD.
