L'azienda Western Digital ha raccomandato agli utenti di disconnettere immediatamente i dispositivi di archiviazione WD My Book Live e My Book Live Duo da Internet a causa di segnalazioni di perdita di tutto il contenuto degli archivi. Attualmente si sa solo che a causa dell'azione di un malware sconosciuto viene avviato un ripristino remoto dei dispositivi, cancellando tutto il contenuto salvato sullo storage. <\/p>\n

I dispositivi WD My Book Live e My Book Live Duo supportano la connessione Ethernet e funzionano come storage di rete con accesso remoto ai propri file e configurazione tramite il servizio cloud di Western Digital. L'azienda ha dichiarato che al momento non sono stati riscontrati fatti che indichino che l'attacco sia avvenuto attraverso la compromissione del servizio cloud, piuttosto che dei dispositivi finali degli utenti. <\/p>\n

Si ipotizzava che l'attacco potrebbe essere stato effettuato ottenendo il controllo su singoli account utenti nel servizio cloud, ma secondo i rapporti delle vittime, alcuni di loro avevano disattivato la funzione di gestione tramite il servizio cloud. L'ipotesi principale sull'accaduto si basa sul fatto che l'attacco a WD My Book Live e My Book Live Duo avviene tramite una vulnerabilit\u00e0 non corretta dal 2018 (CVE-2018-18472) nel firmware, che permette l'esecuzione remota di codice con privilegi di root. Il supporto per gli storage WD My Book Live e My Book Live Duo \u00e8 stato interrotto nel 2015 e da allora non sono stati rilasciati aggiornamenti del firmware.
