Microsoft ha annunciato l'apertura del codice sorgente dello strato D3D9On12, che implementa un'interfaccia dispositivo (Device Driver Interface - DDI) che traduce i comandi Direct3D 9 (D3D9) in comandi Direct3D 12 (D3D12). Questo strato consente l'esecuzione di applicazioni legacy in ambienti che supportano solo D3D12, e potrebbe essere utile per implementare D3D9 basato su progetti come vkd3d e VKD3D-Proton, i quali offrono un'implementazione di Direct3D 12 per Linux, eseguendo la traduzione delle chiamate D3D12 nell'API grafica Vulkan.
