Ha riassunto l'esperienza acquisita durante l'analisi dei problemi di prestazioni che Netflix ha affrontato nella migrazione del database Cassandra da CentOS a Ubuntu in ambienti eseguiti su Amazon EC2 basato su Xen. Dopo la migrazione, il carico sulla CPU \u00e8 aumentato del 30% e circa altrettanto sono aumentati i tempi di latenza nelle operazioni di scrittura. Si \u00e8 scoperto che le prestazioni delle applicazioni che richiedono intensamente informazioni sul tempo dipendono fortemente dalla sorgente di tempo preciso scelta nel sistema.    <\/p>\n<p>All'inizio la causa della perdita di prestazioni non era evidente e la diagnosi \u00e8 iniziata monitorando il possibile impatto di processi di sistema ad alta richiesta di risorse, sempre attivi o avviati periodicamente, utilizzando strumenti come top ed execsnoop. Ma tutto indicava che il consumo di risorse fosse aumentato proprio nel database Cassandra, scritto in Java. Il confronto delle metriche di profiling di due processi Cassandra, eseguiti contemporaneamente in CentOS e Ubuntu e che elaborano le stesse richieste, ha rivelato che circa il 32% di tutto il tempo \u00e8 speso nella chiamata a os::javaTimeMillis(), utilizzata per ottenere informazioni sull'ora attuale.    <\/p>\n<p>Successivamente \u00e8 stato condotto un esperimento, durante il quale \u00e8 stata scritta un'applicazione semplice in Java, che richiama il metodo System.currentTimeMillis() cento milioni di volte in un ciclo. L'esecuzione dell'applicazione ha mostrato che su CentOS ci sono voluti 13 secondi, mentre su Ubuntu \u2014 circa 68 secondi, ovvero 5 volte pi\u00f9 lentamente. \u00c8 stata scritta un'applicazione simile in C, che richiama la funzione gettimeofday() cento milioni di volte, ma anche in questo caso sono stati ottenuti risultati analoghi.          <\/p>\n<p>Poich\u00e9 \u00e8 stato chiaro che la fonte del problema era la funzione che restituisce l'ora corrente, l'attenzione \u00e8 stata spostata sul cambiamento delle prestazioni selezionando diverse fonti di tempo preciso nel sistema. A giudicare dal contenuto di \u00ab\/sys\/devices\/system\/clocksource\/clocksource0\/current_clocksource\u00bb, per impostazione predefinita all'avvio di Linux nel sistema guest veniva utilizzato il timer \u00abxen\u00bb. Dopo aver cambiato la fonte del tempo in \u00abtsc\u00bb, il tempo di esecuzione dell'applicazione di test su Ubuntu \u00e8 diminuito da 68 a 3.3 secondi, ovvero \u00e8 diventato 20 volte pi\u00f9 veloce. Per impostazione predefinita, il TSC non \u00e8 attivato poich\u00e9 in passato questa fonte non escludeva la deriva graduale del tempo, che in altri gestori viene corretta tramite software per ottenere misurazioni pi\u00f9 accurate. Secondo un ingegnere specializzato nello sviluppo di processori, le preoccupazioni sui salti temporali nell'utilizzo del TSC non sono pi\u00f9 valide da tempo e nel <a href=\"https:\/\/prohoster.info\/it\/server\/dts-riga\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"376\">nei processori moderni<\/a> questa fonte pu\u00f2 fornire letture stabili per anni.     <\/p>\n<p>Tradurre le operazioni <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/prohoster.info\/it\/server\/\"   title=\"server\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1610\">server<\/a> In Netflix, passare alla fonte TSC ha portato a una riduzione dei ritardi di registrazione del 43% e, utilizzando Ubuntu, a risultati quattro volte superiori rispetto alla configurazione con CentOS usando la fonte di tempo \u00abxen\u00bb. I risultati dello studio condotto sono stati trasmessi ad Amazon, che ha ufficialmente raccomandato di utilizzare, negli ambienti AWS EC2 basati sul hypervisor Xen, la fonte di tempo TSC come
