Gli strumenti sviluppati nel progetto consentono di individuare vari errori e anomalie nei testi sorgente, scritti in linguaggi di alto livello come C\/C++, basandosi su un modello addestrato su un ampio volume di codice esistente. Il sistema \u00e8 adatto per identificare diversi tipi di problemi nel codice, dalla rilevazione di errori di battitura e combinazioni di tipi errati, fino all'individuazione di controlli mancanti per valori NULL nei puntatori e problemi di gestione della memoria. Il codice di ControlFlag \u00e8 scritto in C++ ed \u00e8 open source con licenza MIT.      <\/p>\n<p>Il sistema si auto-addestra costruendo un modello statistico del codice disponibile da progetti open source pubblicati su GitHub e in repository pubblici simili. Durante la fase di addestramento, il sistema identifica schemi tipici nella costruzione delle strutture di codice e crea un albero sintattico delle relazioni tra questi schemi, riflettendo il flusso di esecuzione del codice nel programma. Alla fine, si forma un albero di decisione di riferimento che unisce l'esperienza di sviluppo di tutti i testi sorgente analizzati.     <\/p>\n<p>Per il codice analizzato, viene eseguito un processo simile di identificazione dei pattern, che vengono confrontati con l'albero di decisione di riferimento. Grandi discrepanze rispetto ai rami adiacenti indicano la presenza di un'anomalia nel pattern esaminato. Il sistema consente anche di non solo rilevare un errore nel pattern, ma anche di suggerire una correzione. Ad esempio, nel codice OpenSSL \u00e8 stata identificata la struttura \u00ab(s1 == NULL) \u2227 (s2 == NULL)\u00bb, che si trovava nell'albero sintattico solo 8 volte, mentre il ramo pi\u00f9 vicino con il valore \u00ab(s1 == NULL) || (s2 == NULL)\u00bb si trovava circa 7.000 volte. Tale errore sarebbe stato rilevato anche da analizzatori statici tradizionali, ma a differenza di questi, ControlFlag non applica regole predefinite, nelle quali \u00e8 difficile prevedere tutte le possibili varianti, ma si basa sulle statistiche di utilizzo di varie costruzioni in un gran numero di progetti.     <\/p>\n<p>Come esperimento, utilizzando ControlFlag nei testi sorgente dell'utility cURL, che viene spesso citata come esempio di codice di qualit\u00e0 e verificato, \u00e8 stato identificato un errore non rilevato dai tradizionali analizzatori statici nell'uso dell'elemento di struttura \u00abs-&gt;keepon\u00bb, che aveva un tipo numerico, ma veniva confrontato con un valore booleano TRUE. Nel codice OpenSSL, oltre al problema sopra menzionato con \u00ab(s1 == NULL) \u2227 (s2 == NULL)\u00bb, sono state identificate anomalie nelle espressioni \u00ab(-2 == rv)\u00bb (il meno era un
