Nel catalogo PyPI (Python Package Index) sono state identificate tre librerie contenenti codice dannoso. Prima dell'individuazione dei problemi e della rimozione dal catalogo, in totale i pacchetti sono stati scaricati quasi 15.000 volte. <\/p>\n

I pacchetti dpp-client (10194 download) e dpp-client1234 (1536 download) sono stati distribuiti da febbraio e includevano codice per inviare il contenuto delle variabili d'ambiente, che, ad esempio, potevano includere chiavi di accesso, token o password per sistemi di integrazione continua o ambienti cloud come AWS. I pacchetti inviavano anche a un host esterno un elenco con il contenuto delle directory \u00ab\/home\u00bb, \u00ab\/mnt\/mesos\/\u00bb e \u00abmnt\/mesos\/sandbox\u00bb.

Il pacchetto aws-login0tool (3042 download) \u00e8 stato ospitato nel repository PyPI il 1 dicembre e includeva codice per scaricare e avviare un'applicazione trojan per prendere il controllo degli host che funzionano su Windows. Nella scelta del nome del pacchetto, si pensava che i tasti \u00ab0\u00bb e \u00ab-\u00bb fossero vicini e che ci fosse la possibilit\u00e0 che lo sviluppatore digitasse \u00abaws-login0tool\u00bb invece di \u00abaws-login-tool\u00bb.

I pacchetti problematici sono stati identificati durante un semplice esperimento in cui con l'utility Bandersnatch \u00e8 stata scaricata una parte dei pacchetti PyPI (circa 200.000 su 330.000 pacchetti nel repository), dopodich\u00e9 l'utility grep ha estratto e analizzato i pacchetti il cui file setup.py menzionava la chiamata \u00abimport urllib.request\u00bb, tipicamente utilizzata per inviare richieste a host esterni.
