Per sfruttare la vulnerabilit\u00e0, un attaccante deve avere accesso fisico al supporto crittografato, ovvero il metodo ha senso principalmente per attaccare dispositivi esterni crittografati, come le chiavette USB, a cui un malintenzionato ha accesso ma non conosce la password per decrittografare i dati.    <\/p>\n<p>L'attacco \u00e8 applicabile solo al formato LUKS2 ed \u00e8 legato alla manipolazione dei metadati che gestiscono l'attivazione dell'estensione \"online reencryption\", che consente di avviare il processo di ri-critografia dei dati al volo senza interrompere l'uso della partizione quando \u00e8 necessario cambiare la chiave di accesso. Poich\u00e9 il processo di decrittazione e crittografia con la nuova chiave richiede tempo, \"online reencryption\" offre la possibilit\u00e0 di continuare a lavorare sulla partizione e di eseguire la ri-critografia in background, trasferendo gradualmente i dati da una chiave all'altra. \u00c8 anche possibile scegliere una chiave di destinazione vuota, il che consente di convertire la partizione in uno stato decrittografato.     <\/p>\n<p>L'attaccante pu\u00f2 apportare modifiche ai metadati LUKS2 per simulare un'interruzione imprevista dell'operazione di decrittazione a causa di un guasto e ottenere la decrittazione di parte della partizione dopo l'attivazione e l'uso di un'unit\u00e0 modificata da parte del proprietario. In questo caso, l'utente che collega l'unit\u00e0 modificata e la sblocca con la password corretta non riceve alcun avviso sull'esecuzione del processo di ripristino dell'operazione di ri-critografia interrotta e pu\u00f2 scoprire l'andamento di tale operazione solo tramite il comando \"luks Dump\". La quantit\u00e0 di dati che l'attaccante pu\u00f2 decrittografare dipende dalla dimensione dell'intestazione LUKS2, ma con la dimensione predefinita (16 MiB) pu\u00f2 superare i 3 GB.      <\/p>\n<p>Il problema \u00e8 causato dal fatto che, nonostante la riestrazione richieda il calcolo e la verifica degli hash delle nuove e vecchie chiavi, per avviare la decrittazione l'hash non \u00e8 necessario, se il nuovo stato implica l'assenza di una chiave per la crittografia (testo in chiaro). Inoltre, i metadati di LUKS2, in cui \u00e8 definito l'algoritmo di crittografia, non sono protetti da modifiche in caso di accesso da parte di un malintenzionato. Per bloccare questa vulnerabilit\u00e0, gli sviluppatori hanno aggiunto una protezione aggiuntiva nei metadati di LUKS2, per cui ora viene verificato un ulteriore hash, calcolato sulla base delle chiavi note e del contenuto dei metadati, cio\u00e8 l'attaccante non pu\u00f2 pi\u00f9 modificare silenziosamente i metadati senza conoscere la password per la decrittazione.    <\/p>\n<p>Uno scenario tipico di attacco richiede che il malintenzionato abbia la possibilit\u00e0 di ottenere ripetutamente il dispositivo. Inizialmente, l'attaccante, che non conosce la password di accesso, apporta modifiche all'area dei metadati che avviano la decrittazione di parte dei dati alla successiva attivazione del dispositivo. Poi, il dispositivo viene restituito e l'attaccante aspetta che l'utente lo colleghi inserendo la password. Durante l'attivazione del dispositivo da parte dell'utente, viene avviato un processo di riestrazione in background, durante il quale parte dei dati crittografati viene sostituita con dati decrittografati. Successivamente, se l'attaccante riesce a ottenere di nuovo il dispositivo, parte dei dati sul supporto sar\u00e0 in forma decrittografata.          <\/p>\n<p>Il problema \u00e8 stato identificato dal maintainer del progetto cryptsetup ed \u00e8 stato risolto negli aggiornamenti cryptsetup 2.4.3 e 2.3.7. Lo stato della creazione di aggiornamenti con la correzione del problema nelle distribuzioni pu\u00f2 essere seguito su queste pagine: Debian, RHEL, SUSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch. La vulnerabilit\u00e0 si manifesta solo a partire dalla versione cryptsetup 2.2.0, in cui \u00e8 stata introdotta la supporto per l'operazione \"online reencryption\".
