Per sfruttare questa vulnerabilit\u00e0, un attaccante deve avere accesso fisico al supporto crittografato, il che significa che questo metodo \u00e8 essenzialmente utile per attacchi a dispositivi esterni crittografati, come le chiavette USB, a cui l'aggressore pu\u00f2 accedere ma non conosce la password per decrittografare i dati.    <\/p>\n<p>L'attacco \u00e8 applicabile solo al formato LUKS2 e coinvolge la manipolazione dei metadati responsabili dell'attivazione dell'estensione \"online reencryption\", che consente, in caso di necessit\u00e0 di cambiare la chiave di accesso, di avviare il processo di re-criptazione dei dati in tempo reale senza interrompere l'attivit\u00e0 con la partizione. Poich\u00e9 il processo di decriptazione e crittografia con la nuova chiave richiede tempo, l'\"online reencryption\" offre la possibilit\u00e0 di non interrompere l'uso della partizione e di eseguire la re-criptazione in background, trasferendo gradualmente i dati da una chiave all'altra. \u00c8 anche possibile scegliere una chiave di destinazione vuota, il che consente di convertire la partizione in uno stato decriptato.     <\/p>\n<p>Un attaccante pu\u00f2 apportare modifiche ai metadati LUKS2, simulando un'interruzione imprevista dell'operazione di decrittazione a causa di un guasto, riuscendo cos\u00ec a decrittare una parte della partizione dopo l'attivazione e l'utilizzo di un'unit\u00e0 modificata da parte del proprietario. In questo caso, l'utente che collega l'unit\u00e0 modificata e la sblocca con la password corretta non riceve alcun avviso riguardo al processo di recupero dell'operazione di ricrittografia interrotta e pu\u00f2 conoscere lo stato di tale operazione solo utilizzando il comando &#171;luks Dump&#187;. La quantit\u00e0 di dati che l'attaccante pu\u00f2 decrittare dipende dalle dimensioni dell'intestazione LUKS2, ma con la dimensione predefinita (16 MiB) pu\u00f2 superare i 3 GB.      <\/p>\n<p>Il problema \u00e8 causato dal fatto che, nonostante il ri-criptaggio richieda il calcolo e la verifica degli hash delle nuove e vecchie chiavi, per iniziare la decriptazione non \u00e8 necessario alcun hash se il nuovo stato implica l'assenza di una chiave per la crittografia (testo in chiaro). Inoltre, i metadati LUKS2, in cui viene specificato l'algoritmo di crittografia, non sono protetti da modifiche se dovessero finire nelle mani di un malintenzionato. Per bloccare questa vulnerabilit\u00e0, gli sviluppatori hanno aggiunto una protezione aggiuntiva nei metadati LUKS2, per i quali ora viene controllato un hash extra, calcolato sulla base delle chiavi conosciute e del contenuto dei metadati, cio\u00e8 l'attaccante non pu\u00f2 pi\u00f9 modificare silenziosamente i metadati senza conoscere la password per la decriptazione.    <\/p>\n<p>Uno scenario tipico di attacco richiede che l'aggressore abbia la possibilit\u00e0 di ottenere pi\u00f9 volte il dispositivo. Inizialmente, l'attaccante, che non conosce la password di accesso, apporta modifiche all'area dei metadati che attivano la decrittazione di una parte dei dati alla successiva attivazione del dispositivo. Poi il dispositivo viene restituito al suo posto e l'aggressore aspetta che l'utente lo colleghi, inserendo la password. Durante l'attivazione del dispositivo da parte dell'utente, viene avviato un processo in background di ri-crittografia, durante il quale parte dei dati crittografati viene sostituita da dati decrittografati. Successivamente, se l'aggressore riuscir\u00e0 a ottenere di nuovo il dispositivo, parte dei dati sul dispositivo sar\u00e0 in forma decrittografata.          <\/p>\n<p>Il problema \u00e8 stato identificato dal maintainer del progetto cryptsetup ed \u00e8 stato risolto negli aggiornamenti cryptsetup 2.4.3 e 2.3.7. \u00c8 possibile monitorare lo stato dell'aggiornamento che risolve il problema nei seguenti distribuzioni: Debian, RHEL, SUSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch. La vulnerabilit\u00e0 si manifesta solo a partire dalla versione cryptsetup 2.2.0, che ha introdotto il supporto per l'operazione \u00abonline reencryption\u00bb.
