Thorsten Behrens, uno dei leader del team di sviluppo del sistema grafico di LibreOffice, ha pubblicato una versione dimostrativa della suite per ufficio LibreOffice, compilata in codice intermedio WebAssembly e in grado di essere eseguita nel browser (circa 300 MB di dati vengono caricati sul sistema dell'utente). Per la conversione in WebAssembly \u00e8 stato utilizzato il compilatore Emscripten, mentre l'output \u00e8 gestito dal backend VCL (Visual Class Library) basato su un framework Qt5 modificato. Le correzioni specifiche per il supporto di WebAssembly sono sviluppate principalmente nel repository di LibreOffice. <\/p>\n

A differenza della versione LibreOffice Online, la build basata su WebAssembly consente di eseguire l'intera suite per ufficio nel browser, ovvero tutto il codice viene eseguito sul lato client, mentre LibreOffice Online esegue e gestisce tutte le azioni dell'utente su server<\/a>, mentre nel browser del client viene trasmesso solo l'interfaccia. Spostare la maggior parte di LibreOffice sul lato browser permetter\u00e0 di creare una versione cloud per la collaborazione, alleggerendo il carico su server<\/a>, minimizzando le differenze rispetto alla versione desktop di LibreOffice, semplificando la scalabilit\u00e0, in grado di funzionare in modalit\u00e0 offline e consentendo anche l'organizzazione di interazioni P2P tra gli utenti e la crittografia end-to-end dei dati sul lato utente.
