Gli sviluppatori delle aziende Red Hat e Collabora hanno iniziato a creare un driver Vulkan aperto, nvk, per schede grafiche NVIDIA, che completer\u00e0 i driver gi\u00e0 esistenti in Mesa: anv (Intel), radv (AMD), tu (Qualcomm) e v3dv (Broadcom VideoCore VI). La sviluppo del driver si basa sul progetto Nouveau, utilizzando alcune sottosistemi precedentemente impiegate nel driver OpenGL Nouveau. <\/p>\n

Parallelamente, nel progetto Nouveau \u00e8 iniziato il lavoro per spostare in una libreria separata le funzionalit\u00e0 universali che possono essere utilizzate in altri driver; ad esempio, nella libreria sono stati trasferiti componenti per la generazione di codice, che possono essere utilizzati per la condivisione del compilatore di shader tra i driver per OpenGL e Vulkan. <\/p>\n

Alla sviluppo del driver Vulkan si sono uniti Karol Herbst, sviluppatore di Nouveau di Red Hat, David Airlie, mantenitore della sottosistema DRM di Red Hat, e Jason Ekstrand, attivo sviluppatore di Mesa di Collabora. Il driver \u00e8 ancora in una fase iniziale di sviluppo e non \u00e8 ancora adatto per applicazioni che non siano l'esecuzione dell'utility vulkaninfo. La necessit\u00e0 di un nuovo driver \u00e8 giustificata dalla mancanza di driver Vulkan aperti per le schede grafiche NVIDIA, mentre sempre pi\u00f9 giochi utilizzano questa API grafica o vengono eseguiti su Linux tramite strati che traducono le chiamate Direct3D nell'API Vulkan.
