Un gruppo di ricercatori sulla sicurezza del team uCode ha pubblicato i testi sorgente per la decifrazione del microcodice Intel. Per estrarre il microcodice crittografato pu\u00f2 essere utilizzata la tecnica Red Unlock, sviluppata dagli stessi ricercatori nel 2020. La possibilit\u00e0 di decifrare il microcodice proposta consente di esplorare la struttura interna del microcodice e i metodi di implementazione delle istruzioni macchina x86. Inoltre, i ricercatori hanno ripristinato il formato degli aggiornamenti del microcodice, l'algoritmo di crittografia e la chiave utilizzata per proteggere il microcodice (RC4). <\/p>\n

Per determinare la chiave di crittografia utilizzata, \u00e8 stata sfruttata una vulnerabilit\u00e0 in Intel TXE, che ha permesso di attivare una modalit\u00e0 di debug non documentata, a cui i ricercatori hanno assegnato il nome in codice \"Red Unlock\". In modalit\u00e0 di debug, \u00e8 stato possibile caricare direttamente dalla CPU un dump con il microcodice in esecuzione ed estrarre da esso l'algoritmo e le chiavi. <\/p>\n

L'insieme di strumenti consente solo di decifrare il microcodice, ma non offre la possibilit\u00e0 di modificarlo, poich\u00e9 l'integrit\u00e0 del microcodice viene ulteriormente verificata attraverso una firma digitale basata sull'algoritmo RSA. Il metodo si applica ai processori Intel della famiglia Gemini Lake basati sull'architettura micro Goldmont Plus e Intel Apolo Lake basati sull'architettura micro Goldmont.
