IWD pu\u00f2 essere utilizzato autonomamente o come backend per i configuratori di rete Network Manager e ConnMan. Il progetto \u00e8 adatto per dispositivi embedded e ottimizzato per un consumo minimo di memoria e spazio su disco. IWD non utilizza librerie esterne e si avvale solo delle funzionalit\u00e0 fornite dal kernel Linux. Include una propria implementazione del client DHCP e una serie di funzioni crittografiche. Il codice del progetto \u00e8 scritto in linguaggio C e viene distribuito con la licenza LGPLv2.1.      <\/p>\n<p>La nuova versione introduce le seguenti novit\u00e0:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> Aggiunta la supporto per la configurazione degli indirizzi, dei gateway e delle rotte per le reti IPv4 e IPv6 (tramite iwd senza l'uso di utilit\u00e0 aggiuntive).\n<li class=\"l\"> Fornita la possibilit\u00e0 di modificare l'indirizzo MAC all'avvio.\n<li class=\"l\"> Attivata la lista delle reti con i punti di accesso, che possono essere utilizzati per il roaming (in precedenza, veniva selezionato un unico punto di accesso con le migliori prestazioni; ora viene mantenuta una lista classificata per BSS, per una rapida selezione dei punti di accesso di riserva in caso di fallimento della connessione al punto di accesso scelto).\n<li class=\"l\"> Implementato il caching e il ripristino delle sessioni TLS per EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol).\n<li class=\"l\"> Aggiunto il supporto per le cifrature con chiavi a 256 bit.\n<li class=\"l\"> Nell'implementazione della modalit\u00e0 Access Point \u00e8 stato aggiunto il supporto per l'autenticazione dei client che utilizzano il protocollo obsoleto TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol).
