La vulnerabilit\u00e0, soprannominata PMFault, pu\u00f2 essere utilizzata per compromettere server a cui l'attaccante non ha accesso fisico, ma ha accesso privilegiato al sistema operativo, ad esempio, a seguito di sfruttamento di una vulnerabilit\u00e0 non corretta o di intercettazione delle credenziali dell'amministratore.       <\/p>\n<p>Il metodo proposto consiste nell'utilizzare l'interfaccia PMBus, che applica il protocollo I2C, per aumentare la tensione fornita alla CPU a livelli che causano danni al chip. L'interfaccia PMBus \u00e8 solitamente implementata nel modulo VRM (Voltage Regulator Module), a cui \u00e8 possibile accedere attraverso manomissioni del controller BMC. Per attaccare le schede che supportano PMBus, oltre ai privilegi da amministratore nel sistema operativo, \u00e8 necessario avere accesso software al BMC (Baseboard Management Controller), ad esempio, tramite la porta IPMI KCS (Keyboard Controller Style), attraverso Ethernet o tramite un aggiornamento del firmware del BMC dal sistema attuale.      <\/p>\n<p>La presenza di un problema che consente di eseguire un attacco senza conoscere i parametri di autenticazione nel BMC \u00e8 stata confermata su schede madri Supermicro con supporto IPMI (X11, X12, H11 e H12) e ASRock, ma anche altre schede server che consentono l'accesso a PMBus sono vulnerabili. Negli esperimenti condotti, l'aumento della tensione fino a 2.84 volt su queste schede ha portato al danneggiamento di due processori Intel Xeon. Per accedere al BMC senza conoscere i parametri di autenticazione, ma avendo accesso root al sistema operativo, \u00e8 stata utilizzata una vulnerabilit\u00e0 nel meccanismo di verifica dei firmware, che ha permesso di caricare un aggiornamento del firmware modificato nel controller BMC, nonch\u00e9 l'opportunit\u00e0 di accesso non autenticato tramite IPMI KCS.     <\/p>\n<p>Il metodo per modificare la tensione attraverso PMBus pu\u00f2 essere utilizzato anche per eseguire l'attacco Plundervolt, che consente di danneggiare il contenuto delle celle di dati nella CPU, utilizzate durante i calcoli in enclave isolate Intel SGX, causando errori in algoritmi corretti. Ad esempio, se si riesce a modificare il valore utilizzato nell'operazione di moltiplicazione durante la crittografia, il testo cifrato in uscita risulter\u00e0 errato. Se un attaccante ha la possibilit\u00e0 di accedere al gestore SGX per crittografare i propri dati, pu\u00f2 raccogliere statistiche sulle modifiche del testo cifrato all'uscita, accumulando statistiche e recuperando il valore della chiave memorizzata nell'enclave SGX.    <\/p>\n<p>Gli strumenti per condurre attacchi su schede Supermicro e ASRock, cos\u00ec come un'utilit\u00e0 per
