Le versioni sono preparate per le architetture x86_64, ARM64, s390x e ppc64le sotto forma di immagine avviabile (900 MB), immagine minima (1,9 GB) e immagine completa (12 GB). In seguito, si prevede di creare versioni Live con GNOME, KDE, Xfce e MATE, oltre a immagini per Raspberry Pi, WSL, contenitori e piattaforme cloud.    <\/p>\n<p>La distribuzione \u00e8 completamente compatibile a livello binario con Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.8 e pu\u00f2 essere utilizzata come una sostituzione trasparente di CentOS 8. Le modifiche riguardano il rebranding, la rimozione di pacchetti specifici per RHEL, come redhat-*, insights-client e subscription-manager-migration*.           <\/p>\n<p>Il sistema AlmaLinux \u00e8 stato sviluppato da CloudLinux in risposta alla cessazione prematura del supporto per CentOS 8 da parte di Red Hat (il rilascio di aggiornamenti per CentOS 8 \u00e8 stato interrotto alla fine del 2021, e non nel 2029 come inizialmente previsto dagli utenti). Il progetto \u00e8 supervisionato da una organizzazione no-profit chiamata AlmaLinux OS Foundation, creata per promuovere uno sviluppo su una piattaforma neutra, coinvolgendo la comunit\u00e0 e utilizzando un modello di governance simile a quello del progetto Fedora. Il sistema \u00e8 gratuito per tutte le categorie di utenti. Tutti i progressi di AlmaLinux sono pubblicati sotto licenze libere.     <\/p>\n<p>Oltre ad AlmaLinux, come alternativa al classico CentOS 8 si trovano anche Rocky Linux (sviluppato dalla community sotto la direzione del fondatore di CentOS, supportato dalla compagnia Ctrl IQ), VzLinux (preparato da Virtuozzo), Oracle Linux, SUSE Liberty Linux ed EuroLinux. Inoltre, Red Hat ha reso possibile l'uso gratuito di RHEL nelle organizzazioni che sviluppano software open source e in ambienti di singoli sviluppatori con un massimo di 16 sistemi virtuali o fisici.
