Eric Raymond, uno dei fondatori dell'organizzazione OSI (Open Source Initiative) e pioniere del movimento del software open source, ha pubblicato lo strumento Autodafe, che consente di convertire le istruzioni di compilazione e gli script utilizzati dagli strumenti Autotools in un normale Makefile, facilmente leggibile e modificabile dagli sviluppatori. Il codice del progetto \u00e8 scritto in Python e distribuito con licenza BSD. <\/p>\n

Include il programma makemake, che trasforma il file Makefile generato dall'utility automake in un Makefile leggibile ed equivalente, adatto per la modifica da parte degli esseri umani e privo delle strutture interne di automake. L'uso supplementare dell'utility ifdex consente di rimuovere completamente il progetto da Autotools, sostituendolo con un normale Makefile. <\/p>\n

La motivazione per la creazione del progetto Autodafe \u00e8 il desiderio di tornare all'uso di normali Makefile piuttosto che complicati script Autotools, emerso dopo l'incidente dell'inserimento di un backdoor nel pacchetto xz. Tra i vantaggi di questo approccio si segnala la semplificazione delle regole di compilazione, che saranno pi\u00f9 facili da verificare e pi\u00f9 difficili da rendere vulnerabili a funzionalit\u00e0 nascoste. Tra gli svantaggi si nota la perdita di supporto per i vecchi sistemi Unix, l'aumento della dipendenza da libtool e la riduzione della flessibilit\u00e0 nelle configurazioni.
