Il progetto SmolBSD sviluppa uno strumento per la creazione di micro-build di NetBSD, che includono solo i componenti minimi necessari per un'applicazione specifica e possono essere avviati in meno di un secondo. SmolBSD pu\u00f2 essere utilizzato per creare ambienti virtualizzati ridotti per l'esecuzione isolata di singoli servizi. La dimensione dell'ambiente di base creato \u00e8 di circa 10 MB. Per creare ambienti \u00e8 stato preparato lo strumento mksmolnb, che pu\u00f2 essere eseguito su NetBSD e GNU\/Linux. Durante la compilazione su NetBSD, nel sistema operativo generato viene utilizzato il file system FFS, mentre su Linux viene utilizzato ext2. Nello strumento sono forniti esempi di script per avviare gli ambienti creati in QEMU e nel sistema di virtualizzazione Firecracker, che implementa il concetto di microVM, mirato a raggiungere prestazioni paragonabili a quelle dei normali container utilizzando la virtualizzazione hardware basata su hypervisor.
