L'implementazione si basa sull'uso del protocollo StatusNotifierItem, originariamente sviluppato dal progetto KDE (il supporto in GNOME \u00e8 stato realizzato tramite un'estensione). Una pagina per tenere traccia dei lavori su questo argomento \u00e8 stata creata nel novembre 1999. Purtroppo, il correzione non \u00e8 stata completata in tempo per essere inclusa nell'ultimo rilascio di Thunderbird 128 ESR.
