The test release of the Xfce 4.20 Pre2 desktop environment has been published, aiming to provide a classic desktop environment that requires minimal system resources. The release is expected on December 29, if a decision is made to publish another test release, Xfce 4.20 Pre3, or on December 15, if developers consider the codebase stable enough. <\/p>\n

The Xfce 4.20 branch is notable for adding experimental support for working with the Wayland protocol. A new library, libxfce4windowing, is employed to abstract the operation over Wayland and X11, offering a graphics system-independent layer where window management components (screens, root windows, virtual desktops, etc.) are implemented. Instead of libmutter, the wlroots library, developed by the Sway project, is used in the Wayland-based session. <\/p>\n
