Nel codice sorgente utilizzato per la creazione della versione primaverile di GNOME 48, \u00e8 stata introdotta una modifica che porta l'ambiente desktop all'uso predefinito del font Adwaita Sans. Il font Cantarell \u00e8 stato utilizzato in GNOME dal 2010, ma la necessit\u00e0 di sostituzione \u00e8 emersa a causa della stagnazione nello sviluppo e dei problemi di manutenzione. <\/p>\n

Il nuovo font Adwaita Sans si basa sul font Inter, progettato specificamente per l'uso nelle interfacce utente e ottimizzato per garantire alta chiarezza dei caratteri di piccole e medie dimensioni (meno di 12px) quando visualizzati sugli schermi dei computer. A differenza del font Cantarell, attorno al progetto Inter si \u00e8 formato una grande comunit\u00e0 che continua a sviluppare il font, correggere le imperfezioni, implementare nuove funzionalit\u00e0 tipografiche e testare la qualit\u00e0 di visualizzazione per diverse lingue e tipi di schermi.

A differenza di Inter, in Adwaita Sans \u00e8 accentuata la distinzione tra la lettera maiuscola «I» e quella minuscola «l». Inoltre, in Adwaita Sans continua a essere utilizzata di default una rappresentazione simile della lettera «O» e del numero «0» (per mostrare il numero 0 con il punto centrale, \u00e8 possibile impostare la modalit\u00e0 «ss02» nella propriet\u00e0 font-feature-settings, supportata in GTK).
