Come dichiarato dal CEO di Microsoft Satya Nadella, attualmente sono in corso i lavori di adattamento della parte userspace del popolare sistema operativo Windows a un nuovo proprio kernel ibrido, basato sul codice sorgente del kernel del sistema operativo FreeBSD. Pertanto, Windows 12 \u00e8 l'ultimo sistema operativo di Microsoft che utilizza il kernel NT, mentre le successive versioni avranno un nuovo kernel con il nome in codice \u00abTomato\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Una delle principali ragioni di questa decisione \u00e8 rappresentata dai crescenti problemi di supporto legati al nucleo NT, che non \u00e8 pi\u00f9 in linea con le attuali esigenze, oltre alla crescente popolarit\u00e0 dei nuclei simili a NIX negli ambiti dei dispositivi mobili e dell'IoT.<\/p>\n

Si prevede che, oltre ai tradizionali sistemi di chiamata di sistema BSD, il nuovo nucleo avr\u00e0 anche un'interfaccia alternativa basata su COM\/WinRPC per interagire con il codice utente.
