Gli sviluppatori di Ubuntu Linux hanno pianificato il passaggio predefinito all'uso del progetto Chrony per la sincronizzazione del tempo preciso in tutte le versioni di Ubuntu 25.10. In precedenza, Ubuntu utilizzava il servizio systemd-timesyncd, che \u00e8 stato deciso di sostituire per poter utilizzare il protocollo NTS (Network Time Security) per la protezione crittografica della sincronizzazione del tempo. <\/p>\n

Il progetto Chrony offre un'implementazione indipendente del client e del server NTP, gi\u00e0 in uso per la sincronizzazione del tempo preciso in Fedora, SUSE\/openSUSE e RHEL. NTS garantisce che il client interagisca con il server NTP target e non con uno compromesso. La sostituzione del server NTP rappresenta un rischio, poich\u00e9 un'impostazione errata dell'orario pu\u00f2 essere sfruttata per compromettere la sicurezza di altri protocolli che dipendono dal tempo, come TLS e DNSSEC. La modifica del tempo pu\u00f2 portare a un'interpretazione errata dei dati riguardanti le azioni dei certificati. <\/p>\n

Il protocollo NTS utilizza elementi dell'infrastruttura a chiave pubblica (PKI) per organizzare un canale di comunicazione crittografato e consente l'uso di TLS e crittografia autenticata AEAD (Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data) per proteggere gli utenti dagli attacchi che mimano il server NTP. NTS include due protocolli distinti: NTS-KE (NTS Key Establishment), utilizzato per gestire l'autenticazione iniziale e il coordinamento delle chiavi sopra TLS, e NTS-EF (NTS Extension Fields), responsabile della crittografia e dell'autenticazione della sessione di sincronizzazione del tempo. NTS aggiunge ai pacchetti NTP diversi campi estesi e conserva tutte le informazioni sullo stato solo dal lato client, utilizzando un meccanismo di trasmissione dei cookie. Per gestire le connessioni tramite il protocollo NTS, viene utilizzata la porta di rete 4460. <\/p>\n

Il pacchetto Chrony \u00e8 gi\u00e0 incluso nel repository principale ed \u00e8 utilizzato per impostazione predefinita in alcune edizioni di Ubuntu per sistemi cloud. Il lavoro per sostituire systemd-timesyncd con Chrony inizier\u00e0 il 2 giugno. L'inclusione di Chrony nelle build comporter\u00e0 una dipendenza aggiuntiva, \"libedit2\", e porter\u00e0 a un aumento delle dimensioni dell'immagine di 803 KB.
