Gli sviluppatori di Ubuntu Linux hanno previsto il passaggio predefinito all'uso del progetto Chrony per la sincronizzazione precisa dell'ora in tutte le versioni di Ubuntu 25.10. Precedentemente, in Ubuntu era utilizzato il servizio systemd-timesyncd, che si \u00e8 deciso di sostituire per sfruttare il protocollo NTS (Network Time Security) per la protezione crittografica della sincronizzazione dell'orario. <\/p>\n

Il progetto Chrony offre un'implementazione indipendente del cliente e del server NTP, gi\u00e0 utilizzata per la sincronizzazione dell'ora in Fedora, SUSE\/openSUSE e RHEL. NTS garantisce che il cliente interagisca con il server NTP previsto e non con uno alterato. La sostituzione del server NTP rappresenta un rischio, poich\u00e9 impostare un'ora errata potrebbe compromettere la sicurezza di altri protocolli temporali, come TLS e DNSSEC. Una modifica dell'ora pu\u00f2 portare a malinterpretazioni dei dati relativi all'operativit\u00e0 dei certificati. <\/p>\n

Il protocollo NTS utilizza elementi dell'infrastruttura a chiave pubblica (PKI) per stabilire canali di comunicazione crittografati e consente di applicare TLS e crittografia autenticata AEAD (Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data) per proteggere gli utenti da attacchi che imitano i server NTP. NTS include due protocolli distinti: NTS-KE (NTS Key Establishment), utilizzato per gestire l'autenticazione iniziale e il negoziato delle chiavi sopra TLS, e NTS-EF (NTS Extension Fields), responsabile della crittografia e dell'autenticazione della sessione di sincronizzazione dell'ora. NTS aggiunge ulteriori campi estesi ai pacchetti NTP e mantiene tutte le informazioni sullo stato solo dal lato del cliente, utilizzando un meccanismo di trasmissione dei cookie. Per gestire le connessioni tramite il protocollo NTS viene utilizzata la porta di rete 4460. <\/p>\n

Il pacchetto Chrony \u00e8 gi\u00e0 incluso nel repository principale ed \u00e8 utilizzato di default in alcune versioni di Ubuntu per sistemi cloud. Il lavoro per sostituire systemd-timesyncd con Chrony inizier\u00e0 il 2 giugno. L'inclusione di Chrony nelle build comporter\u00e0 un'ulteriore dipendenza da 'libedit2' e porter\u00e0 a un aumento delle dimensioni dell'immagine di 803 KB. Per sostituire systemd-timesyncd con Chrony su Ubuntu 25.04, \u00e8 possibile utilizzare il comando 'apt-mark auto systemd-timesyncd && apt install chrony', mentre per tornare a systemd-timesyncd \u2014 'apt-mark auto chrony && apt install systemd-timesyncd'.
