Ariadne Conill, creatore del lettore musicale Audacious, iniziatore dello sviluppo del protocollo IRCv3 e leader del team di sicurezza di Alpine Linux, ha pubblicato l'implementazione iniziale di un layer Wayback, che permette di eseguire ambienti desktop legati al protocollo X11, utilizzando componenti basati su Wayland. Il progetto fornisce un server composito Wayland, limitato alla possibilit\u00e0 di avviare una sessione X11 a schermo intero attraverso Xwayland.
