Il team responsabile per le release di GNOME ha approvato l'inclusione nel core di GNOME di un nuovo visualizzatore di documenti chiamato Papers. A partire dalla release GNOME 49, il programma Papers sar\u00e0 fornito al posto di Evince come Document Viewer, il visualizzatore di documenti predefinito. Le modifiche relative alla sostituzione di Evince con Papers sono state accettate nel repository di GNOME. In Ubuntu 25.04, l'applicazione Papers \u00e8 gi\u00e0 fornita invece di Evince. <\/p>\n

L'applicazione Papers \u00e8 un fork di Evince, creato un anno fa da uno dei partecipanti allo sviluppo del ramo evince-next con l'obiettivo di modernizzare significativamente la base di codice. Le principali differenze di Papers includono il porting alla libreria GTK4 e l'utilizzo del linguaggio Rust per lo sviluppo \u2014 il codice che gestisce l'interfaccia utente viene riscritto in Rust. Tra le differenze significative, si evidenziano anche una notevole modernizzazione del design, un aumento delle prestazioni e l'integrazione di strumenti per la firma digitale dei documenti. <\/p>\n

Dal punto di vista funzionale, Papers \u00e8 simile a Evince e consente anch'esso di visualizzare, cercare e annotare documenti nei formati PDF, DjVu, TIFF e archivi di fumetti (CBR, CBT, CBZ, CB7). In Papers sono stati effettuati miglioramenti sull'API delle librerie libppsdocument e libppsview, con la cessazione del supporto per il formato DVI e la piattaforma Windows. Molti widget interni di Evince sono stati sostituiti con widget standard GTK. \u00c8 stata interrotta l'uso del processo in background papersd. Invece di un riavvio manuale del documento, questa operazione ora viene eseguita automaticamente quando viene rilevata una modifica del file. \u00c8 stata rimossa una barra strumenti separata per l'aggiunta di annotazioni, raccomandando invece di utilizzare il menu contestuale o le scorciatoie da tastiera.
