Il funzionamento di OpenZL consiste nella generazione adattiva di un pacchetto sulla base della descrizione dei dati fornita. La struttura dei dati \u00e8 descritta attraverso profili. Gi\u00e0 in dotazione ci sono una serie di profili predefiniti che descrivono i formati di memorizzazione standard. Ad esempio, un profilo per il formato CSV o per i dati memorizzati come array di numeri a 64 bit. La compressione si riduce alla selezione del profilo con il comando \"zli list-profiles\" e avviando il processo di compressione con il comando \"zli compress --profile nome_profili\". Per decomprimere basta avviare \"zli decompress\".    <\/p>\n<p>Per formati specifici \u00e8 necessario creare un proprio profilo utilizzando il comando \"zli train\", che identifica schemi nei dati e crea un profilo con il livello ottimale di compressione. Utilizzando l'opzione \"--pareto-frontier\", il profilo creato pu\u00f2 essere aggiornato per velocizzare la compressione o decompressione, a scapito della riduzione del livello di compressione. Per descrivere formati complessi con strutture annidate e definire la disposizione dei formati dei dati nelle strutture pu\u00f2 essere utilizzato il linguaggio SDDL (Simple Data Description Language).      <\/p>\n<p>Il metodo per creare compressori ottimali si basa sull'applicazione di un insieme di codificatori primitivi, ognuno dei quali \u00e8 pi\u00f9 efficace per specifici tipi e sequenze di dati. Per la compressione si forma un grafo aciclico orientato per l'elaborazione dei dati, dove i nodi sono codec e gli archi rappresentano le varianti di dati nel formato elaborato. A seconda del tipo di dati in ingresso, viene selezionata una catena di codec che comprimono in modo ottimale l'elemento di dati ricevuto.
