Per le sue caratteristiche, ChkTag ricorda l'estensione MTE (MemTag), gi\u00e0 fornita nei processori ARM, e permette inoltre di bloccare l'exploitation di vulnerabilit\u00e0 causate dall'accesso a blocchi di memoria gi\u00e0 liberati, overflow di buffer o accesso alla memoria prima dell'inizializzazione.      <\/p>\n<p>ChkTag offre nuove istruzioni per il processore che consentono di associare tag a aree nella memoria e di organizzare il controllo della correttezza dell'uso dei puntatori. Si afferma che l'uso di queste istruzioni da parte dei compilatori garantir\u00e0 un'operazione sicura con la memoria senza ridurre le prestazioni delle applicazioni. Inoltre, le applicazioni che utilizzano ChkTag rimarranno compatibili con i vecchi processori che non hanno supporto hardware per ChkTag, semplificando cos\u00ec l'implementazione della protezione.    <\/p>\n<p>Il metodo di protezione realizzato consiste nella creazione di un tag per ciascun blocco di memoria, che funge da chiave per l'accesso a quella memoria (ad esempio, nell'implementazione di MTE, per ogni 16 byte viene creato un tag di 4 bit). Il tag \u00e8 generato dall'applicazione per l'area di memoria allocata tramite istruzioni speciali della CPU, e poi viene memorizzato nei bit superiori inutilizzati del puntatore, cos\u00ec come in un'area riservata e non accessibile dalle applicazioni nella memoria lineare\/virtuale. Quando si accede alla memoria utilizzando un puntatore taggato, il processore verifica la corrispondenza del tag associato al puntatore con i tag associati ai blocchi di memoria e consente l'accesso solo se i tag corrispondono.      <\/p>\n<p>La tecnologia ChkTag \u00e8 stata sviluppata nell'ambito di una collaborazione tra Intel e AMD all'interno del gruppo EAG (x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group), costituito un anno fa per collaborare alla garanzia della compatibilit\u00e0 tra le piattaforme x86, alla standardizzazione delle interfacce dei prodotti Intel e AMD, alla semplificazione dello sviluppo software per sistemi x86 e all'identificazione delle esigenze degli sviluppatori per l'espansione dell'architettura. Oltre a Intel e AMD, tra i membri del gruppo figurano Linus Torvalds, creatore del kernel Linux, Tim Sweeney, fondatore di Epic Games e uno dei principali sviluppatori del motore di gioco Unreal Engine, e rappresentanti di aziende come Broadcom, Dell, Google, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle e Red Hat.     <\/p>\n<p>Oltre a ChkTag, Intel e AMD hanno anche standardizzato e unificato le implementazioni del modello di gestione delle interruzioni FRED (Flexible Return and Event Delivery), del set di istruzioni vettoriali AVX10 e delle estensioni per la moltiplicazione di
