Il progetto ChaosBSD sviluppa un fork di FreeBSD che viene sincronizzato periodicamente, focalizzandosi sul test dei driver prima della loro inclusione nella versione principale di FreeBSD. Il progetto fornisce una piattaforma per lo sviluppo e il porting di nuovi driver, oltre a testare, collaudare e stabilizzare driver parzialmente funzionali, instabili e incompleti, il cui stato di sviluppo non consente di integrarli nella versione principale di FreeBSD.
