Bruce Dubbs, editor-in-chief of the Linux From Scratch project, announced the discontinuation of updates for the Linux From Scratch (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch (BLFS) guides in the configuration with the SysVinit initialization system. Access to the LFS\/BLFS 12.4 guide with SysVinit will be retained, but the release scheduled for March 1 of LFS\/BLFS 13.0 will only be formed in the variant with the system manager systemd. <\/p>\n

In Linux From Scratch, there are instructions on how to build a basic Linux system from scratch using only the source texts of the necessary software. Beyond Linux From Scratch complements the LFS instructions with information on building and configuring application software packages covering various areas, from database management systems and server systems to graphical shells and media players. <\/p>\n

The reasons for abandoning the development of the guides with SysVinit include a lack of resources and the cessation of support for SysVinit by major projects such as GNOME and KDE Plasma. The project is supported by a small team of volunteers who cannot keep up with the flow of changes in 88 LFS packages and over 1000 packages in BLFS, in conditions that require testing all packages for functionality in System V and systemd environments. Furthermore, the latest versions of GNOME and KDE Plasma require functionalities of systemd, which could potentially be implemented by switching to OpenRC, but migration would not resolve the issue of the editors' overload. <\/p>\n

Bruce also noted that this is a forced decision with which he is not satisfied. Systemd includes 1678 files in C plus many data files, while SysVinit contains 22 files in C and about 50 small bash scripts and data files. Despite the significant functional advantage of systemd, in Bruce's opinion, after the discontinuation of support for SysVinit, the book will lose components important for understanding how the system works.
