Hanno sviluppato un chip compatto con un array di miniaturizzati laser a semiconduttore (VCSEL, Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser), che utilizza la luce anzich\u00e9 le onde radio per la trasmissione dei dati. Nei test di laboratorio, il sistema ha raggiunto una velocit\u00e0 record di 362,7 Gbit\/s, superando di gran lunga le capacit\u00e0 delle tradizionali reti Wi-Fi e cellulari.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c8 importante notare che l'efficienza energetica della soluzione proposta \u00e8 risultata essere il doppio rispetto a quella della comunicazione radio: per un bit di informazione erano necessari circa 1,4 nJ, il che consentir\u00e0 di ridurre significativamente il consumo energetico in condizioni di crescente carico sulle reti.<\/p>\n<p>Alla base della tecnologia c'\u00e8 un chip di meno di un millimetro con un array di laser in matrice 5\u00d75, dove ogni elemento funziona in modo indipendente e trasmette un flusso di dati separato. Un sistema ottico speciale con micro-lenti forma la direzionalit\u00e0 di ciascun fascio, creando una rete uniforme di zone illuminate a una distanza di fino a due metri senza interferenze reciproche (l'esperimento \u00e8 stato eseguito in un ambiente normale con il trasmettitore e il ricevitore distanziati di due metri).<\/p>\n<p>La matrice di LED trasmittenti permette di servire contemporaneamente pi\u00f9 utenti in un unico ambiente. La modulazione del segnale utilizzando diversi canali di frequenza ha garantito un'alta capacit\u00e0 di trasmissione\u2014fino a 362,7 Gbit\/s con 21 LED accesi su 25. La velocit\u00e0 di trasmissione poteva essere anche superiore, ma \u00e8 stata limitata da un ricevitore ottico economico acquistato in negozio, utilizzato nell'esperimento.<\/p>\n<p>Le dimensioni compatte del chip trasmettitore permettono di integrarlo in punti di accesso, lampade e ovunque, garantendo una connessione ad alta velocit\u00e0 nelle immediate vicinanze dell'utente. Se ci sono pi\u00f9 utenti, in modalit\u00e0 multi-canale, ognuno di loro ricever\u00e0 la propria parte di traffico ad alta velocit\u00e0, come confermato nell'esperimento che ha organizzato quattro canali di comunicazione distinti con una capacit\u00e0 di trasmissione impressionante. In questo caso, la velocit\u00e0 di funzionamento di ciascun laser della matrice raggiungeva i 19 Gbit\/s.<\/p>\n<p>Gli sviluppatori sottolineano che la comunicazione ottica non \u00e8 soggetta ai problemi di interferenza tipici delle frequenze radio, un aspetto particolarmente importante per ambienti affollati come uffici, ospedali, data center e spazi residenziali. Questa nuova tecnologia non sostituir\u00e0 il Wi-Fi o la comunicazione mobile, ma li completer\u00e0, alleggerendo il carico principale dai componenti radiocomunicanti nelle aree chiuse.
