Il documento \u00e8 stato proposto dalla societ\u00e0 terza One Limited, creata al di fuori del processo di standardizzazione IETF e ha lo status di 'Internet-Draft' (chiunque possa rispettare le formalit\u00e0 pu\u00f2 pubblicare una bozza del genere). Nell'intestazione del pacchetto, il campo IP indica il numero di versione 8 e vengono assegnati 64 bit sia all'indirizzo del mittente che a quello del destinatario: 32 bit per il prefisso ASN + 32 bit per l'indirizzo host in stile IPv4. Nella tabella globale di routing BGP8 \u00e8 consentita una sola registrazione per ogni ASN, la dimensione minima del prefisso in BGP8 \u00e8 \/16.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c8 stato dichiarato che la soluzione \u00e8 totalmente retrocompatibile, l'implementazione pu\u00f2 avvenire senza soluzione di continuit\u00e0 e non sar\u00e0 necessaria la modifica degli dispositivi, delle applicazioni e delle reti esistenti per l'uso di IPv8. Ci\u00f2 \u00e8 ottenuto grazie all'uso nelle reti finali e nei sistemi client di IPv4 con l'accesso alla rete globale tramite il traduttore di indirizzi XLATE8, che trasforma le chiamate tra IPv4 e IPv8 in modo simile al NAT.
