Microsoft ha pubblicato sotto licenza MIT il codice sorgente dei sistemi operativi 86-DOS 1.00 e PC-DOS 1.00, insieme alle librerie runtime del compilatore Microsoft BASIC-86, all'assemblatore SCP, agli strumenti CHKDSK e EDLIN. PC-DOS 1.00 \u00e8 notevole perch\u00e9 \u00e8 stata la prima versione di DOS per computer IBM PC. Il codice \u00e8 stato recuperato nell'ambito di un progetto di ricostruzione del codice delle prime versioni di DOS per CPU 8086, attraverso la scansione e la trascrizione di stampe cartacee d'archivio create nel 1981 e 1982.
