Anche se questo linguaggio \u00e8 solitamente utilizzato per scrivere e mantenere applicazioni aziendali nel settore finanziario, un appassionato con il nickname icitry ha deciso di testare l'idoneit\u00e0 del linguaggio per la creazione di giochi tridimensionali. Come nel caso del classico <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doom_(gioco,_1993)\">Doom<\/a>, questo sparatutto si basa sulla tecnologia <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raycasting\">raycasting<\/a>. Naturalmente, scrivere un'applicazione tridimensionale in un linguaggio cos\u00ec antico ha presentato alcune difficolt\u00e0, poich\u00e9 COBOL non ha un proprio stack grafico o librerie per l'elaborazione dei pixel. Pertanto, FPS.cob restituisce ogni fotogramma del gioco in formato immagine raster non elaborata in STDOUT. Un approccio simile \u00e8 stato adottato per l'input dei comandi, per le stesse ragioni, ma relative alle librerie di gestione degli input da tastiera.
